I'M UNCOMFORTABLE

2026.05.14

I have been sort of uncomfortable lately in various ways. I will describe it in this current blog post.

PLEASE STEP LIKE TWO STEPS BACK
Today, Sasaki sensei was totally right up in my face when I asked her for takoyaki recommendations. I realized something about myself: I don’t like when random people get super close to my face. That makes me uncomfortable. Sasaki sensei and I were literally cheek to cheek as I, practically we, scrolled through my google maps for the takoyaki place. I got so nervous and I terribly screwed up the name like three times it was so awkward. I literally just wanted to scoot back a little she was way too close for comfort. My leg even began shaking. I didn’t like it. Next time, I might just discreetly scoot back. Also, It was extra strange because afterwards, I realized my lip had so many crumbs from the biscuit that Nagira sensei gave me earlier. I looked disgusting.

MAYA-CHAN
Yesterday, I went to a board game meetup where I played Catan with a Japanese man, a French man, and an Australian man. This is a tangent, but I got sort of angry at the French guy because he said “we’re gonna play a short game to 10 points.” I responded “I think Catan is up to 10 points usually...” and he kept on being like “a normal game is typically 15 points.” It was literally a 2 and a half hour game. I didn’t mind this, but I really came to this event so I can speak to Japanese people. Anyway, tangent over. About halfway through this game, a Japanese woman came up and sat down next to me. She was the owner of the space. It was a really cool place. Basically, the first floor was a bar and the second floor was a gaming lounge where there was four computers and many short Japanese style round tables. You had to take off your shoes on the first floor before going up. This place was great. The games they had were right up my alley. Japanese board games are incredible. I’ll make sure to buy some before heading back to the US. Anyway, the owner began asking me questions and calling me “Maya-chan.” Chan is used for children or cute girls. I found this personally sort of uncomfortable. I think this is because I still have the mindset of a child which is okay.

Anyway, today, me and Hanni-san ate Sakaki sensei’s recommendation of Takoyaki, then walked through Americamura which was kinda cool. It was basically a bunch of American street-ware (thousands of oversized T-shirts) + three Jamaican guys. I’ll go back again. じゃね。
