SHORT FILM RATINGS!
Remember when I said I was going to post more of my short film rating tomorrow five days ago? Well, tomorrow is now today!
RATING SHORT FILMS!!! pt.2
Once again, I’ll be rating on 8 different metrics: concept, plot, script, production design, cinematography, acting, sound/music, and editing (and a BONUS!: “Lasting Impact”). Though, this time, I have added an additional two factors: believability, and if it made me cry. I will also write which metric was a highlight for me. BE WARNED: All of this is subjective to my experience. Also, all films were found on this website: https://filmshortage.com. 行きましょう!
I cannot make u understand!!! by Mitchell Greenberg
“When a young mechanic’s obsession with bodybuilding drives her to buy steroids, she must decide between maintaining a life with her overbearing mother, or taking off for the dark streets of Los Angeles and into the unknown.”
This was a fine film, though the scene when the mother smashes the steroids was kinda corny to me.
Florescence by Harry Rylott
“A young married couple retreat to an English country house in an attempt to salvage Lucy’s worsening mental health. John’s strict instructions and their self-imposed isolation pushes their relationship to breaking point and Lucy begins to experience strange phenomena in the house.”
I really need to start reading the descriptions before watching because I was so confused throughout watching. I swear, it’s like they deliberately put half of the plot in the description. This film was fine, but it wasn’t for me.
Wes to Delphi by A.J. Riggins
“On his final day at the gym that raised him, Wes prepares to step into the ring one last time before leaving behind the only home he’s ever known in pursuit of something bigger.”
I really did not enjoy this film. It was confusing even after reading the description, and sort of cliche. Although, that one scene where he punches the guy in the hole and it transitions to him in the ring was cool. Would not watch again.
Snowflakes by Sabrina Stoll
“Charly is stuck in a children’s hospital for weeks on end. She looses her childlike spirit and is only longing to go outside to play in the snowy park. But her treatment prevents her to interact with the outside world. Nothing seems to cheer Charly up, until Lana, another patient, manages to make it snow in Charly’s room. Magic or imagination? It doesn’t matter because even if it’s only for a moment, everything seems to be better for Charly.”
Okay, the description pretty much explains the entire thing. You don’t even need to watch it. This film made me mad by how stupid it made me feel, but I think this was made for children and not 19 year old pseudo-emo girls. The design also made me feel uncomfortable, but that might just be me.
Skate Bait by David Quinn
“An old roller skating rink is closing its doors for good when a strange visitor shows up late looking for one final skate. Will the young man left behind to clean up grant her wish?”
The entire time I was wondering why the video quality was subpar, until they said it was shot on an iPhone. I was gonna give cinematography a 0, but I had to give it to their inventiveness. BTW, this is a comedy, but I didn’t think it was particularly funny. The people who made this film should have studied what makes me laugh before creating this film. How disappointing :/
No One is Coming to Rescue You by David Quinn
“Harry’s brought his new girlfriend to meet his family on a beautiful summer’s day. Little does he know she harbours a long standing, dark revenge against his doctor father, whom he hero-worships. The shit is about to hit the fan. A film about class, manners, medical misogyny, and female revenge.”
This film felt like someone had a random idea and tried to build a story around it, or like the beginning of an improv scene when someone comes in with something completely random and everyone is is trying to figure out their place. I didn’t think it was that coherent, but I loved the emotions this film put me through.
It Was English by Brian Petchers
“An aspiring poet confronts the cruelty of fate after a chance encounter with a lost lover.
”
This might have been the best short film I have watched. The concept was not original which is okay because it was executed perfectly. That’s exactly what I love about the Japanese: they perfect preexisting things.
yay! I love short films. I want to watch more.
ANOTHER SONG!
I have another song for you.
Song making is truly an addiction for me. I suddenly just want to stop doing everything and continue making songs. Every morning, my first instinct is to go on my phone and listen to my latest song. Then, I go to my computer and make more songs. I LOVE IT!
This week I’ve been going on Instagram a lot and at the end of every session, I find myself obsessively scrolling through the page of some model, or comedic personality, or a mix of both. Hence, this song is based off of the insecurities and comparisons the internet creates, particularly for young women. There are two, the first version and the lastest version. Which one do you like more?:
first:
lastest:
Sorry that the reverb in the lastest version cuts out for a second. It's super annoying becuase I only have the demo of the VST.
As I was creating this, I noticed it sounded like a more electronic version of Daughter’s “Dreams of William” (fun fact: my brother’s favorite Daughter song).
I love these kinds of drops where it starts out sad and desperate, then becomes fiery and desperate. I think it’s because I’m a teenager.
I would totally love to make a music video for this song actually. I want it to be a mix between The Wombats’ “Greek Tragedy” music video (if you haven’t watched it, don’t if you don’t like gore/scary stuff) + Kim Petras’ “I Like Ur Look.”
Here’s to another 50 posts! No, 100! No, 40002! NO, 6003948502019293! Lol Jk, I’ll probably be dead by then. Okay, じゃね!
